Answer FIVE (5) questions, choosing one (1) question from each section. Question one (1) is compulsory. Be neat, and clear on your answers. Write your name on every page of your answer sheet (s). SECTION A. (40 Marks) INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE. Answer question one (1) and any other from this section. 1. (a) Briefly define the following terms by giving one example. (i) Lingua franca (ii) Standard language (iii) Speech community (iv) Accent. (b) Which are the processes that are involved in standardizing a language? 2. Discuss five characteristics of human language. 3. Drawing an example from English language, explain five factors that effect the development of a language. SECTION B. (20 Marks) LANGUAGE SKILLS. Answer one (1) question from this section. 4. Explain the following terms; (a) Skimming (b) Scanning (c) Intensive reading (d) Critical reading (e) Extensive reading 5. Show the differences that exist in the following terms by using examples; (i) Listening and hearing (ii) Facts and opinions (iii) In – text citation and End – of – essay citation (iv) Referencing and plagiarism SECTION C (20 Marks) WORD FORMATION AND MORPHOLOGY. 6. (a) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: A thick vegetation cover, such as tropical forests, acts as a protection against physical weathering and also helps to slow the removal of the weathered layer. In deserts and high mountains the absence of vegetation accelerates the rate of weathering. Plants and animals, however, play a significant part in rock destruction, notably by chemical decomposition through the action of organic acidic solutions. The acids develop from water percolation through partly decayed vegetation and animal matter. Questions: From the passage identify: (i) five lexical morphemes (ii) five derivational morphemes (iii) five inflectional morphemes (iv) five roots (b) Name the processes involved in the formation of the following groups of words. (i) televise – television, opt – option, emote – emotion, enthuse – enthusiasm. (ii) telecast, motel, heliport, brunch. (iii) facsimile – fax, cabriolet – cab, advertisement and examination – exam. (iv) alcohol, boss, piano, zebra (v) loanword, wastebasket, water – bird, finger point. 7. (a) Write new sentences by changing each of the words in capitals into a noun. (i) You have to DECIDE whether to go for further studies or not. (ii) For the language to develop, it MUST borrow some vocabularies from other languages. (iii) The names of evil doers were BLACKLISTED. (iv) What you DECIDE today will automatically affect your future. (v) We expect to PRODUCE enough crops this year because there is enough rain. (b) Provide the adjectival form for the following words and write one sentences for each. (i) Medicine (ii) Break (iii) Memory (iv) Mentathy (v) Measure SECTION D. (20 Marks) LANGUAGE USE. Answer one (1) question from this section. 8. (a) Define the following terms: (i) Translation (ii) Interpretation (iii) Source language (iv) Target language (b) Mention six (6) translation principles. 9. (a) Write these sentences correctly: (i) The ex-monitor come from the handsome village. (ii) On our visit to the park we saw a swarm of whales. (iii) Kilimanjaro is the longest mountain in Africa. (iv) Form six candidates understand that it is a must for everyone to perform an examination. (v) His young sister bought only one kilogram of sugar because she is still a bachelor. (b) Translate the following English expressions into Kiswahili language by considering the structure of the target language: (i) We are expecting to travel by bus. (ii) I feel dizzy. (iii) Mr. Massawe is aged now.
